originally published by SCIENCE ON SCREEN

Dr. Pascal Lee will give an illustrated presentation about planning and preparation for the first human mission to Mars. First steps are under way, as we plan for deep space journeys and explore extreme environments on Earth. Dr. Lee will discuss our progress, from the Arctic to Antarctica, from basement labs to the International Space Station, to achieve the first human voyage to Mars.

Following Dr. Lee’s talk, we will screen THE MARTIAN in 3D format. Nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture, this highly acclaimed film stars Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded alone on Mars and who must find ways to survive until he can be rescued.

Dr. Pascal Lee is a planetary scientist at the Mars Institute, the SETI Institute and NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View. Internationally recognized for his work on the history of water on Mars, on the origin of Mars’ moons, and on planning the future exploration of Mars, he has led over 30 expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctica to study Mars in comparison to Earth.
