Web and Database Developer

FLSA Status: Part Time, Hourly, 20 hours/week


The SETI Institute is looking for an experienced “full stack” web developer in a production environment. In collaboration with other team members, the Web and Database Developer is responsible for proposing and designing new features and developing long-term technology plans.

 In addition, the incumbent will be learning a large existing body of code (the OPUS search engine of the PDS Ring-Moon Systems Node) written in JavaScript, Python, and SQL as necessary to fix bugs, implement new features, and make performance improvements.


  • Learn the existing code base of the RMS Node, with particular emphasis on OPUS.
  • Fix bugs and make enhancements to the OPUS code base.
  • Develop other online and offline tools as necessary to make OPUS a better service.
  • Help plan the future direction of OPUS, including researching and learning new technologies.
  • Research new and emerging technologies as needed.


  • B.A. degree is required. 
  • Ability to learn existing code bases and new technologies quickly.
  • Desire and ability to find bugs proactively.
  • Able to provide improvement recommendations in order to enhance the quality of the product.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment and without direct supervision for long periods.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.

Technical Requirements:

JavaScript, AJAX, jQuery, Bootstrap, Django, Python, and MySQL. Experience with git a plus.


  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Sort, file paperwork, grasp lightly, and use fine manipulation, lift, carry, push and pull objects that weigh up to 25 lbs.
  • Stand, walk, reach or work above shoulders and use a telephone.
